Eligibility

The competition is open oboists and bassoonists of all nationalities who are age 29 or less by August 16, 2011.

 

Introduction

The ADRA and the College of Music, Mahidol University, are pleased to announce the 1st International ADRA Oboe and Bassoon Competition. Oboists and Bassoonists will compete in two separate categories, each with cash prizes and the opportunity to perform with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. There are two rounds, a tape round and a final round. The top five contestants in each category will be invited to compete in the final round, which will take place live on the first day of the ADRA conference, August 16, 2011. The two competition winners will perform with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra on August 19, 2011.

 

Application

The online application will be announced soon. Applicants will need to prepare the following:

  1. The application fee of 1,800 Thai Baht. This will be payable by credit card or international bank transfer.
  2. A digital photograph.
  3. A biography.
  4. Proof of age. This can be a scan of the applicant’s passport or ID card.
  5. A recording. The recording must be with piano accompaniment and be completely free of editing. The applicant will be required to sign a statement certifying that they personally performed on the recording.

The repertoire will be the same for both the tape round and the final round. The competition winners will perform the Mozart Oboe Concerto and the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto in E Minor with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday, August 19.

Travel Stipends

The five oboists and five bassoonists selected for the final round will each receive a travel stipend of 17,000 Thai Baht to help cover travel expenses to attend the final round of the competition. The following 10 oboists and 10 bassoonists not selected for the final round will each receive a travel stipend of 8,500 Thai Baht to help cover travel expenses to attend the conference. Travel stipends will be distributed by hand on the first day of the conference.

 

Competition General Rules

  1. Contestants are required to submit the complete application, with payment, by June 17. Applications received after this time will not be accepted for consideration.
  2. Finalists can use their travel stipend to attend the conference, but will be responsible for air tickets, local transportation, accommodation, and meals during the competition at their own expenses.
  3. Finalists can bring their own accompanist or use a staff pianist at no charge. The staff pianists will be available for rehearsal starting on Sunday, August 14.
  4. The decisions of the jury for both rounds of the competition are final.
  5. The final round will be open to the general public.
  6. The works may be performed with or without repeats at the contestant's discretion.

 

Tape Round

The tape round will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges. After the submission deadline, the performance recordings will be anonymously sent to the jury for evaluation. The jury will rank the first 15 contestants.

 

At the completion of the evaluation, all contestants will be informed by email of the results.

 

The Final Round

The 10 finalists (5 oboe, 5 bassoon) are expected to attend a meeting on Monday, August 15, at 1:00 p.m. at the College of Music, Mahidol University. At the meeting the finalists will be briefed on all aspects of the competition and will determine the order in which the contestants will be performing during the competition. The contestants will draw lots to determine the order.

 

The final round of the competition (both categories) will be judged by six voting members. The committee will consist of two renowned oboe players, two renowned bassoon players, and one specialist in another music area. At least one member will be Thai.

 

The competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16. Each contestant will play selections of the required material (12 minutes). The same jury will evaluate both the oboe and bassoon competitions. The competition winners will be announced in the afternoon of August 16.

 

Performance with the TPO

The competition winners will rehearse with the TPO on Wednesday evening, Thursday afternoon, and Friday afternoon before the concert. It is expected that both competition winners will perform in the final concert of the conference.
